4 excellent New Year’s Resolutions for your fence

New year, new you, new… fence? Well, not necessarily. The trials and tribulations of each year can certainly end up taking their toll on your garden fence panels, but that’s not to say they need replacing entirely. In fact, with some proper care and attention, you might find it surprisingly easy to get the most out of your fence panels this year. That makes them the perfect focus for one of two New Year’s Resolutions in 2024… and if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, here are some of our top suggestions!

Redefine the personality of your garden

The decorations may be coming down for Christmas, but a New Year is just beginning, and that makes now an excellent time to re-evaluate your garden – including what you love about it, and what you think could change. Ornaments and decorations are a great place to start. Some people find little touches like statuettes provide an excellent way of adding extra personality to a space, but they’re far from the only option – you can also express your style in other furnishings, like garden furniture, or the type of plants you choose for your flower beds.

And of course, you’ve got no shortage of options with which you can decorate your fence, ranging from simple hanging decorations and lights, all the way up to more long-term but potentially more rewarding choice, like cultivating creepers in carefully selected areas. It’s all up to you!

Maximise the safety of your outdoor space

Gardens and almost everything in them are almost forever exposed to the elements, which means that they can arguably be some of the most challenging elements of your home to maintain. But while you might (understandably) not be too worried about making sure everything looks constantly pristine, one thing that definitely is worth taking your time for is the overall safety of your outdoor space.

So that means, for example, keeping an eye out for things like cracked paving stones (tripping hazards) or faltering tree branches. In some cases, you may even decide it’s worth looking into some more lighting solutions for your garden, such as solar lights to line the edges of your garden pathways, so that you and your family can more clearly see where you’re going.

Set up your space for what you’d like to do in your garden

Different people use their garden for different things, so now is a great time to think about how you plan to use yours – either now, or later in the year. Maybe you fancy a bit of winter stargazing? In that case, you might want to think about looking for some cosy garden furniture and blankets you can snuggle up under as you scan the skies. Equally, if you’re planning on a couple of barbecues later in the year, you may want to consider installing a cosy fire pit for you and your family to gather around.

Or maybe you just like the solace and tranquillity that your garden offers you, as you crack on with your favourite book. In that case, you may want to think about a pergola to fend off the wind or chill – or even a simple stone bench for the summer.

Stay on top of maintenance for your fence

Let’s be honest, you knew this one was coming! Fence maintenance may not be the most exciting idea in your New Year’s plans, but it plays so many crucial roles in your garden, it’s worth the time and effort it takes to keep in good repair. Thankfully, it’s generally not a hugely intensive job, and doesn’t necessarily need to be separated from what we’ve been discussing already.

While you’re keeping an eye out for cracked paving stones for example, or taking a moment to re-evaluate the style of your garden, that’s a good opportunity to just cast a quick glance over your fence as well. That way, you can make sure that all the panels are in good repair, and that it’s not leaning or suffering from woodworm. You may want to think about implementing a schedule for staining it or treating it, too.
