How to help your garden capture that cosy country Christmas vibe

Let’s be honest, ice sculptures might be a little ambitious, especially for us here in the UK. Happily though, you’ve got all sorts of options to give your garden a cosy Christmas feel, without having to get anything shipped over (or painstakingly carve it in sub-zero temperatures). Best of all, all these suggestions are all fairly flexible, so you’ll be able to adapt them to the style of your garden fence panels, and the size and feel of your garden in general.

Break out the string lights

This is probably the first one you were thinking of, so it makes sense to start with it! Depending on your budget and the size of your garden, you might find that just a few string lights are enough to cover everything you want. If you’ve got big hedges or other large installations though, you might want to consider wrapping them in net lights – these can be slightly more expensive than string lights, but can be more than worth it for the final effect. You can opt for soft white lights for a sense of extra serenity

Get creative!

Don’t hesitate to get a little experimental, especially if you want a more unique look for your space. For example, you can wrap your string lights across the lintel of your back door or your garden shed or wrap them around a column or post (using Christmas greenery or garlands to hide the wires).

Of course, string lights aren’t your only option either. You can also choose festive lighting in the form of different shapes, like Moravian stars. One creative way to use these involves arranging them in odd numbers at different heights and spaces, to create some visual interest for your garden.

In fact, if you want the best effects then it’s always a good idea to mix up your light sources as much as you can. If you’d like, as well as your string lights, netting lights and Moravian stars, you can use small lights in baskets and jars, hung with care across your garden fence panels to give a homely, cosy feel.

Choose your ornaments carefully

When you’ve got your lights arranged to your satisfaction, then there’s no shortage of ornaments for you to bring an extra bit of Christmas cheer. Some cheerful Santa Clauses are probably the most obvious choice, which can be as vibrant or restrained as you please. To be honest, if it’s a cosy Christmas that you want, then you’ll probably want to lean more towards the serene, understated Santa Clauses, with deep red coats and gently twinkling eyes, rather than the more vibrant, winking Santas – the type that you often see in storefronts and shopping centres.

Elves and carved reindeer are also another excellent choice. Where you place them is up to you. For example, if your garden has a pathway, you could line this path with your Christmas ornaments every few steps or so. If you’d like, they could go in prominent places of interest, such as on small plinths or near ponds or water features. Alternatively, you could have them partially visible, nestled in shrubbery and peering out at passers-by. It’s a great way to add a bit of mystery and intrigue to your garden – perfect for creating a cosy Christmas vibe!
