1. Clear your fence regularly
It’s tempting to leave colourful leaves where they land because they look nice, but damp leaves can stain your fencing and trap moisture, which can encourage mould. Sweeping regularly, ideally once or twice a week, keeps your fencing looking tidy and reduces the risk of slippery spots and staining. A soft-bristle broom works well for removing leaves, twigs, and dust without scratching the boards. If you’ve got a larger garden with more fencing, a leaf blower on a low setting can make the job quicker and easier.
2. Give your fencing a gentle wash
Once all the debris is removed, a rinse with a garden hose will wash away dust and light dirt. If the bottom of your fence needs a deeper clean, mix warm water with mild dish soap and gently scrub the boards with a soft sponge or soft-bristle brush. You’ll also want to avoid any harsh chemicals or pressure washers unless your manufacturer recommends them, as they can damage the surface. For larger or older fences, it’s best to tackle one small section at a time. This makes cleaning manageable and guarantees every board gets the attention it needs.
3. Don’t forget gaps and corners
Leaves and dirt can hide between boards or in corners, and that’s where moisture accumulates and causes stains or mould. A plastic scraper, a small brush or even an old credit card works well for clearing these tricky areas. Checking behind any furniture or planters is also important, as debris can easily build up there unnoticed. Even a few minutes spent on these small spots each week makes a big difference to the overall appearance and longevity of your composite fencing throughout autumn and into winter.
4. Final rinse and let it dry naturally
After cleaning, give your fencing one final rinse with a garden hose to remove any leftover soap, dirt, or cleaning solution. Allow the boards to dry naturally before putting furniture, planters, or decorations back. Proper drying prevents moisture from being trapped, which could otherwise cause stains or slippery surfaces and undo all the work you just did.
5. Check for small repairs
Autumn cleaning is a great opportunity to look for minor issues. Loose screws, small chips, or worn edges are easier to fix now than in winter. Pay special attention to the gaps, edges, and corners – these are usually where issues appear first. Taking five or ten minutes during your regular cleaning routine to inspect your fencing can save time, effort, and cost in the long run.
